A bold addition to quirky timber warehouse provides a new identity for a community arts facility.

Silvercloud Studios has been providing low-cost work space for artists for more than 20 years. The original, once the Southern Hemisphere’s largest candied egg factory, was severely damaged by floods in 2022.

Funded by a grant from CreateNSW we designed a vibrant addition that provides a new entry space, workshops, out-of-flood storage for artworks and materials and facilitates equal access.

The design is the result of an intense collaboration with the client and arts organisations from the region. We ran workshops with Arts Northern Rivers, Lismore Regional Gallery, Tropical Fruits and Northern Rivers Performing Arts (NORPA).

Flood-resilient materials are used throughout the new work. Detailing embraces circular design principles whereby almost the entire addition could be unscrewed, dismantled and used elsewhere. The three level addition clad in high performance polycarbonate acts as a beacon of renewal for the Northern Rivers arts community
